Back when I first started to get into filmmaking, I did it for one purpose and that was to have fun. It was fun to get together with my friends and just film whatever we wanted. We didn’t worry about what other people would think of our films, we just did it for ourselves. When I look back at these movies now, they are primitive as hell, but they still hold that charm they did when we first made them.
I lost sight of what was important when I helped developed the DSU Filmmakers. I started to push for huge elaborate movies with complex plots. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s just very hard to do for a small group of amateurs. When things wouldn’t go the way they should, it would result in panic, stress, and most importantly, it was no longer fun. From here on things are going to change. I want to have fun again as I’m sure all of you do. When you have fun making a movie, it shines through in the production and makes it fun to watch. My goal is to resort back to a simpler formula. Shorter movies, simpler plots, and less stress. That’s not to say we are throwing everything out. We have learned so much over the years and with that knowledge we will continue to build upon our new foundation.
Progress has already begun with this new campaign. The club is deciding on a unified new project that we can all collaborate on (which will be discussed more in detail at this Friday’s meeting). Josh Nichols is in pre-production with a new short, The Factory, and I have Batguy Starts coming up in a week. I also continue to develop my cartoon series, Enterprise: Flashed, which currently has a strong following on the internet. It’s time to hit the reset button and look to the past. It’s time to have fun again.
