Sabers II Wraps Up Production

The highly anticipated Star Wars fan film, Sabers II, wrapped up production yesterday evening.  The spiritual sequel to the 2005 short film Sabers, Sabers II promises intense action and a deeper storyline than its predecessor.

The Apprentice and the Rouge

The film entered production in January 2007 when Chad Troftgruben and Amy Tichy began to collaborate on the plot for the new film.  Amy had interest in helping out with the sequel ever since the idea sprang up in 2006 and with her extensive knowledge in the Star Wars universe, she was a welcomed member to the project.  Amy and I worked on several ideas, many of which were hard to execute due to the nature of the film.  Because like the first Sabers, Sabers II was going to have no dialogue and all be told through the actions and emotions of the characters.  After a rough idea was formed, auditions were held.  Even though the auditions brought forth a number of actors, the project remained dormant for the next few months.

This summer, a band of actors came to North Dakota to put on a play.  The play, Robin Hood, was produced in hopes of being put on Broadway.  Amy got involved with the play and planned out a majority of the fight choreography.  It turned out many of these cast members from the play were Star Wars fans.  After that, everything just fell right into place.  We had an eager cast of eight equipped with stage combat experience, a new plot constructed by several of the cast, an excellent fight coordinator and a director/editor ready to film.

The movie was going to be filmed in early July.  However, with the Robin Hood play keeping the cast busy, it was decided to push the movie's production back till after the play.  Rehearsals did take place in July, which allowed the cast to get some of the fights down.  Then in August, a full day of rehearsal took place followed by the film day.  To be honest I was a bit worried there would be problems on the film day due to the limited rehearsal times we had.  But the the talented cast had no problems at all and filming went smoothly, even finishing ahead of schedule.

The cast of Sabers II

There is no doubt in my mind that this will be one of the best, if not the best film to come out of Lilredhead Studios once post-production is completed.  I would again like to extend my thanks to the talented cast.  Without their hard work and dedication, this project wouldn't have been possible.  And I would especially like to thank Amy Tichy.  Without her choreography and coordination during the film day, I would have been lost.

More information for Sabers II will be posted once it becomes available.
