Film Description:

Steven and Joseph lend a hand on Chris’ and Erin’s first date.

Film History:

When we planned the first season of Roomies, this was the episode I was looking forward to the most. It was basically Chad and Josh presents Three’s Company. Because that’s basically what this episode reminds me of, an episode of Three’s Company. And of course with things such as Steven and Joseph’s army men war and the Talking Mime, the episode just seemed really funny on paper. And for the most part I think it transferred well to film. There were some problems when filming, but nothing like we encountered during the first episode.

The big focal point here was the restaurant scene. However, before we shot that, we shot all the dorm room stuff first. Because of the way we scheduled this, we actually shot the second and third episode dorm room scenes back to back. This made for a very long night. And then we shot the classroom, Talking Mime duel, and Chris and Erin’s date for the third episode another day. Because of the separation of days and mixing of filming stuff, there ended up being a blooper with Chris’ wardrobe in episode 2. He goes to class in one shirt and then comes home in another. However, it wasn’t a huge blooper and it could be argued he changed shirts throughout the day. Either way, it wasn’t meant to be like that.

When writing this episode, I wanted there to be an action sequence for the beginning. Of course it eventually changed to a lightsaber duel. I had envisioned the Talking Mime fight to be more… um, epic I guess. However, due to time constraints and lack of choreography, and it ended up being a pretty short and simple scene. I actually cut to Lydia for like half the battle because of the sloppiness that ensued. But since the scene was supposed to be a dream, it kinda worked out.

The restaurant scene went a hell of a lot smoother then I thought it would. I was worried (I worry a lot) when walking onto set, preparing to film this thing. The only real hiccup came when I was filming Josh in the bathroom. While we were in the men’s room, I had Zach Tibor guard the door (for obvious reasons). As we were finishing up, Zach came in and told me a man was outside wanting to speak to whoever was in charge. With Josh dressed the way he was, I went out to see what was up. The man was an employee and the school and it seemed there was a mix up in the scheduling of the ballroom (which is where we filmed the restaurant scene). I had to explain to him that we did reserve the room but it must not have been recorded. After straightening that up, I went back, finished filming Josh, and we exited the restroom. The man spotted us as we walked out and I could tell he was disturbed by the sight of Josh. It’s funny looking back on it now.

During the actual restaurant scene, there are a couple things that come to mind. When setting up the scene we purposely set it up against a wall. We had very little extras and so we had to fake a lot of things. Also, the person who originally was supposed to play the waitress wasn’t able to make it due to personal issues. So I got my friend and long time crew member Justin Huber to play the part of the waiter. What was funny about this was Erin makes a remark about how the movie Max Carnage was a bad film. Max Carnage is actually a short film Justin and I made and Justin starred as Max Carnage. So, it’s kinda funny as she says this line, Justin is pouring her some water.

In the end, this was a fun episode. It was definitely a lot better then episode 1 and is overall a well rounded episode.
