State of the Club Address: Fall 2006 and Beyond

It’s hard to believe that the fall 2006 semester is already here. It seems just like yesterday I was finishing up Roomies- Episode 5 and here we are ready to start filming the second season. With at least 14 episodes planned, this is going to be a hell of a year. And I’m sure we won’t forget it for quite some time.

Every year I like to write a statement about the club, it’s progress, and what’s to come. One year ago when I wrote the first club address (which can be found by clicking here) I talked about the desire to revert back to the basics and just have fun with what we do. Well, as far as I can tell, this administration has succeeded in doing that (with the help of our great members of course). Working on Roomies is the most fun I’ve had with filmmaking in a long time. And judging by the huge amount of people that helped with the project, I can say I’m not alone. But we didn’t only have fun doing it, we broke new ground in the process. We showed everyone what we were capable of, grew to become one of the largest club’s on campus, and even won the “Outstanding Club/Organization of 2006″ award.

We have made much progress in the past two years. When I started going to school at Dickinson State University in 2004, this club didn’t exist. Sure, I’ve made movies with my friends in the past, but what we have built here is beyond anything I could have hoped for. However, there were times when things looked gloomy. Anyone remember the ill fatedInhabitance Bad and Scrooge projects? Some people still bring those two movies up to me today and dwell on them. Living in the past is the worst thing you can do, trust me I know this. Learning from past mistakes though is what makes us stronger. There’s a difference. This organization has chosen the latter and has broken through expectations and most importantly doubts.

In an effort to keep the club unified, there will be at least one meeting a month which will fall on the first Thursday of every month. Last semester Roomies took over and the club itself was neglected a bit. I admit this was a mistake and it will be corrected, for now the Roomiesand DSU Filmmakers meetings will be made into the same entity. If other meetings are scheduled, we will make an effort to notify the members via e-mail at least one week in advance. The website will also be kept up to date with all the information you need. The website was revamped over the summer to be more streamlined and easy to navigate so everyone can stay informed. Keeping the members together and interested is something I always strive for. And my hope is that these new policies and changes will help the effort.

As this probably being my final year at Dickinson State University, I am going to make sure this is the most fun and prosperous year for the DSU Filmmakers yet. Josh Nichols and I also plan to pave the way for a future administration to follow. As one of the executive producers of Roomies, I can tell you that season 2 will blow everyone away. I have already written a few scripts (with the help of Josh Nichols) and all we need now is for our brilliant actors to bring these episodes to life. By the time this school year is over, the DSU Filmmakers will be well known around campus and beyond. We have the talent, ambition, and skills. All we need to do now is saddle up and take this campus by storm.
